Problem
How might we integrate AI meaningfully to truly support clinical decision-making, reduce post-event burden, and enhance process improvement over time?
Solution
Immediate Evaluation Assistance with Two Debrief Solutions
Presented in two formats, Textual Summary and Quality Indicators, the AI parses timestamped event logs, checks compliance against standard benchmarks (e.g., “epinephrine administered within 3 minutes”), and auto-generates a plain-language summary or quality-indicators checkers with compliance status and justifications. This reduces mental load and helps the team confidently verify performance before signing off.
Comprehensive Post-Event Process
After an event is over and the team presses "Stop Recording", they are taken to the Sign-Off page where they can immediately evaluate performance, view full breakdown, and complete debrief.
Longterm Process Improvement with Comparative Analytics
On the longterm, users can review analytics on the CritiTrac Hub (desktop) to see how a current event compares to past events, and whether it meets key performance benchmarks or standards and improve performance.
Now, let's start with some context
ChristianaCare is exploring generative AI to drive innovation and grow its market presence. As a UX intern, I researched and proposed AI integration for CritiTrac, an iPad app used by 10,000+ healthcare professionals to document emergency procedures, laying groundwork to modernize workflows and add value.
Goal
Integrate generative AI into CritiTrac in a way that enhances its usability and marketability
My Role
Propose a solution that aligns with both clinician needs and organizational goals
Key Challenge #1: Designing with a pre-set solution (AI)
Since ChristianaCare wants gen AI as a solution, the challenge was:
How could I design with a solution in mind already? Therefore, I engaged in the following process:
Key Challenge #2: Marketability
Findings Synthesis
Synthesis led to 50+ sticky notes findings, where I conducted a thematic group into three themes: Goals, Features for Improvement, and Inspiring Features. I identified two main opportunities for us.
❇️ Opportunity #1
Focus on Data collection for process improvement & Communication and time
❇️ Opportunity #2
Features including Immediate reports and Quality reports as well as key metrics
Key Challenge #3: Balancing Needs
How could we consider needs of both users and stakeholders and prioritize features?
User
From the perspective of a user, a clinician/a Code Blue Team member, what are their goals and pain points, and how they conflict with the current practice? I benchmarked past user data and conducted 2 qualitative interview and came up with feature ideas as opportunities.
Organization
Through discussions with the team, we prioritized features based on alignment with organizational goals and feasibility. I focused on two high-impact areas: event summaries that evaluate whether clinical standards were met, and event analytics for long-term performance insights.
This approach was intentionally lightweight: engineers could build on existing structured data and timing rules without the need to train complex AI models from scratch. It offered immediate value while setting a foundation for future.
